15th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Cycle A –

For the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the liturgy reminds us that God’s will is not hidden in distant places or reserved for the few. It is near to us, written upon the heart and offered anew each day, inviting a response of both mind and heart. In the Gospel, the question is not simply, “Who is my neighbour?” but rather, “Will I become a neighbour?” The Lord calls us beyond the boundaries we so easily create, inviting us to see others with the compassion that reflects His own heart.

Having celebrated the Feast of Saint Benedict yesterday, we are reminded that holiness is seldom found in extraordinary achievements but in ordinary fidelity. Through prayer, humble work, hospitality, patience and perseverance, Saint Benedict teaches us to seek Christ in the rhythm of everyday life. The Cistercian tradition has always treasured this quiet path, believing that simple acts of love, often unnoticed by the world, become places where the mercy of God is made visible.

As we begin this new week, may we ask for the grace to see in Christ the perfect pattern of compassion and, following the spirit of Saint Benedict, to become true neighbours to those whom the Lord places in our path. In the ordinary circumstances of each day, may we quietly mirror His reconciling love.

Prayer

Loving God,
You draw near to us in the ordinary moments of our lives and reveal Your presence in the quiet rhythm of each day. Teach us to recognise Your wisdom in simple tasks, in faithful prayer, and in the humble work You entrust to us.

Give us, like Saint Benedict, hearts that are attentive to Your voice, eyes that quickly recognise the needs of others, and hands ready to serve without seeking recognition. Grant us the grace to welcome the stranger, to persevere in charity, and to remain faithful in the small things through which Your Kingdom quietly grows.

May our lives become a reflection of Christ’s compassion, so that in loving our neighbour we may come ever closer to You. Fill our hearts with Your peace, strengthen us in perseverance, and keep us faithful to the end.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
