Easter Vigil Reflection

As the sun sets on Holy Saturday, we step into a night like no other. The Easter Vigil is the threshold between death and life, darkness and light. At Our Lady of Silence Abbey, nestled in Ireland’s landscape, we see this night as the heart of our year. The kindling of the fire outside is not merely symbolic; it reminds us that even when all seems lost, God’s light can be rekindled in the world.
We gather around that fire, not simply as a ritual act, but as a proclamation of our deepest hope. When the Paschal candle is lit and carried forward, each of us receives that light. It is a reminder that this light is entrusted to each one of us, to carry into the world. The darkness of the night deepens the meaning—this is not a light that we take for granted, but one that we pass on in faith.
As we stand at the Vigil, surrounded by readings that trace salvation history, we see that this light is not new—it is the eternal light of God’s love, renewed once more in the resurrection of Christ. The service of light is the proclamation that darkness never has the last word. It is the dawn of Easter, and in that light, we begin anew.
